GT-VJ and Mod Round 1 Race Report

Five of the SCHORC faithful gathered for what was to be the first outing of the new brass weighted Viper Jet cars.

The Track

Al had built a fairly tricky circuit which proved a difficult introduction for some to the new Vipers. However once the twisty sections were mastered some very good laptimes were possible.

GT-VJ

Qualifying

Drawing on his experience and national win with the Viper Jets at THORL, Ray expertly drove the new club cars to pole position. Paul didn’t get on with the red club car and despite his early complaints found himself with the second grid spot 9.8 laps behind Ray. A steady drive from Al with his own car saw him take third nearly 3 laps behind Paul. Tony lined up fourth ahead of his brother Steve in fifth.

A consistent drive for Al in red saw him take a straight forward win in the B final. Behind him Tony in blue held off Steve in yellow to take second.

Despite hopping up to the same lane as he used during the B Final, Al couldn’t repeat his previous performance and finished a distant third. Pole-sitter Ray had a great start in blue, but an off on lap 5 handed the lead to Paul in white. Despite offs for both of them, Paul held the lead and took the club’s first Viper Jet win by just under three laps. Paul also took the fastest lap by nearly 3 tenths of a second.

Mod

Qualifying

Despite two long straights the track was definitely a handling circuit. Bearing this in mind Al had switched to his slower but more stuck down ‘B’ chassis. He duly took pole from Paul by 5.3 laps. Ray had rebuilt his Mod with a new motor and lined up third. Tony really had it hooked up in the yellow lane taking the second highest score of the evening and the fastest lap in that lane. Disappointing scores in the other lanes saw him line up fourth ahead of Steve, but gave him hope for the finals.

For the first 15 laps, there was nothing between Tony in yellow and Ray in red. A couple of offs left Tony trailing Ray and sadly he couldn’t repeat the 44.6 laps he set in yellow earlier. Ray took the win comfortably with 41.7 laps, ahead of Tony and Steve.

Paul in blue had the early lead of the A final. Al in red had a cautious start but was gently winding the pressure on Paul up. On lap 4 Paul came off and was briefly third while Ray in yellow nipped past him. Paul had more pace than Ray though and started closing Al in. Paul had the gap down to just a couple of seconds but another off on lap 19 put pay to any ideas he might have about winning. After nearly losing second place again to Ray, Paul dropped his pace and consolidated second. Reigning Mod champ Al took the first Mod win of the season by 3.5 laps from Paul, with Ray third.
