LMP-V1 and Super F1 Round 1 Race Report

Once again there was some excitement in the air of Yelling as SCHORC prepared to start another brand new class for 2017. Ray had prepared some lovely Paul Harwood painted Le Man style bodies for the new V1 Viper cars and they were ready to hit the track.

The Track

Deciding to give the V1s a real baptism of fire, Al had built one of his trickiest tracks for a while. Inspired by the Suzuka circuit in Japan, it had a bridge, high speed corners, short straights, a tight hairpin and a tricky bus stop chicane to finish the lap.

The Track 1

The Track 2

LMP-V1

Qualifying

Paul took the first pole of the new class by 1.9 laps from Al. Al initially used his own V1 on the blue and red lanes before deciding to switch to the faster club cars. Al set a mighty 43.6 laps on the white lane with what was probably the pick of the club cars. Ray lined up third 6 laps behind Al and just over three laps ahead of Nick. Steve completed the grid in fifth.

After a good start in white Ray had an early off that dropped him to second behind Steve in red. Ray was still ahead of Nick in blue though as Nick had also came off on the second tour. Ray then settled into the white lane, passed Steve and romped off into the lead. Nick also passed Steve but couldn’t catch Ray and had to settle for second.

A good start in white left Paul with a small lead over Al in blue and Ray in red. An off on the fourth lap at the by now notorious final chicane dropped Paul down to last. Al held the lead briefly before crashing and handing it to Ray. An off for Ray on his 13th lap then passed the lead back to Al who was a whisker ahead of a hard charging Paul. Paul narrowed the gap until an off gave Al some breathing space. At this point Al just needed to bring it home, for some reason he decided to bin it twice instead and hand the race to Paul. Paul duly took the first win of the new class and bagged the fastest class lap while he was at it.

Qualifying

For the first three laps of the A final there wasn’t anything between Al in white, Ray in blue and Nick in red. On the fourth lap Nick succumbed to the chicane and continued to drop back from Al and Ray. Over the next 10 laps Al managed to eck out a 4 second lead over Ray but an off then handed Ray the lead. Luckily for Al he seemed to have a whisker more pace than Ray and over the next 12 laps he gradually caught him. On lap 28 they both left the track and Al found himself with a small lead that he was able to maintain until the end of the race to take the win.

GT-VJ and Mod Round 1 Race Report

Five of the SCHORC faithful gathered for what was to be the first outing of the new brass weighted Viper Jet cars.

The Track

Al had built a fairly tricky circuit which proved a difficult introduction for some to the new Vipers. However once the twisty sections were mastered some very good laptimes were possible.

The Track 1

The Track 2

GT-VJ

Qualifying

Drawing on his experience and national win with the Viper Jets at THORL, Ray expertly drove the new club cars to pole position. Paul didn’t get on with the red club car and despite his early complaints found himself with the second grid spot 9.8 laps behind Ray. A steady drive from Al with his own car saw him take third nearly 3 laps behind Paul. Tony lined up fourth ahead of his brother Steve in fifth.

Despite hopping up to the same lane as he used during the B Final, Al couldn’t repeat his previous performance and finished a distant third. Pole-sitter Ray had a great start in blue, but an off on lap 5 handed the lead to Paul in white. Despite offs for both of them, Paul held the lead and took the club’s first Viper Jet win by just under three laps. Paul also took the fastest lap by nearly 3 tenths of a second.

Mod

Qualifying

Despite two long straights the track was definitely a handling circuit. Bearing this in mind Al had switched to his slower but more stuck down ‘B’ chassis. He duly took pole from Paul by 5.3 laps. Ray had rebuilt his Mod with a new motor and lined up third. Tony really had it hooked up in the yellow lane taking the second highest score of the evening and the fastest lap in that lane. Disappointing scores in the other lanes saw him line up fourth ahead of Steve, but gave him hope for the finals.

For the first 15 laps, there was nothing between Tony in yellow and Ray in red. A couple of offs left Tony trailing Ray and sadly he couldn’t repeat the 44.6 laps he set in yellow earlier. Ray took the win comfortably with 41.7 laps, ahead of Tony and Steve.

Paul in blue had the early lead of the A final. Al in red had a cautious start but was gently winding the pressure on Paul up. Paul had the gap down to just a couple of seconds but another off on lap 19 put pay to any ideas he might have about winning. After nearly losing second place again to Ray, Paul dropped his pace and consolidated second. Reigning Mod champ Al took the first Mod win of the season by 3.5 laps from Paul, with Ray third.

Nick hopped up to the white lane for the A final. The white car had proved a mixed bag in quali sometimes running well and other times poorly. Nick lucked out and it was a peach for its final race of the year. After a middling start Nick started to deliver some very strong lap times and quickly went from third to first. Paul started well in blue holding the lead for the first two laps before a big off cost him over 6 seconds and left him out of contention. Al started consistently in red and briefly inherited the lead from Paul before Nick passed him. An off for Nick on lap 9 caused him to drop his pace slightly and go for consistency. Behind him Al in red and Ray in yellow were battling for second. Both came off several times but it was Al who was second at the end of the race. F1 Tyco and Modified Round 6 Race Report

The Track

For the final round of the 2016 F1 and Mod season Al had laid out an interesting handling track with some rather cheeky twists and turns.

Qualifying

Ray took his fourth F1 pole position of the season, 7.3 laps clear of Nick who lined up second. Al tied with Nick but lost out on total score so took third. Tony was just one and half laps behind Al in fourth. Aston took the fifth grid slot ahead of Paul in sixth. Paul was having a torrid time with his Tyco, he set the fastest lap of the session but found his car’s handling inconsistent which made it difficult to maintain a good pace.

A mid race off for Al left him with just half a lap in hand but he managed to maintain that gap to Aston and take the win. Despite finishing second it was a very impressive drive from Aston and his highest score of the night.

Al didn’t have the pace in yellow to stay with Nick and Ray and quickly dropped back to a distant third. An early off for Nick in red left Ray in blue with almost a lap in hand. Ray’s pace allowed him to add a couple of seconds to that before an off put the gap back to 4 seconds. Nick cranked up the pace late in the race but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome and a couple of late offs for Nick meant that Ray took the win by 1.9 laps.

Tony duly won the race with 38.6 laps from Al and Roy.

Paul in yellow was the early leader of the A Final but with Tony in white hot on his heels. Paul was the first to come off leaving Tony with the lead until he too crashed. The lead changed hands a couple more times until a couple of offs for Tony put Nick in red up to second. Paul then settled down and went on to take the win with 39.1 laps from Nick and Tony.

Super F1

Qualifying

With Tony heading home after the first class, four racers were left for Super F1. Nick and his SRT powered to pole 1.5 laps clear of Roy who was mainly using his SRT names Son of Red Peril. Despite the Red Peril itself making an appearance in one heat Roy had to settle for the second grid spot. Al looked a little out of sorts with his SRT and was someway off the pace in third. Paul was still struggling with his Mega G and he completed the grid.

With Paul’s Mega G lacking top end speed, Al took a pretty easy win from the white lane.

The B Final was closer, but Al (again in white) seemed to have the measure of Roy and his car and Al took the win by 2.1 laps.

Al (once again in white) gave Nick in yellow a short run for his money over the first 8 laps of the A final. With initially very little separating them, it was a shame that Al binned it and handed Nick a fairly straightforward win. Nick didn’t seem too bothered though with the reigning Super F1 Champion taking his first class win of the season.
