Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 4 Race Report

A warm August evening saw 9 racers gather in Yelling. Ray had brought along his son-in-law Martin and Martin’s young son Aston to join in the fun.

The Track

Al assisted by Paul Homewood and Nick, had built a fast figure of 8 type circuit that had two long straights and some fast sweeping bends along with one reasonably tight corner to keep things interesting.

Qualifying

After some closely fought battles during the heats, Al emerged on top to take pole by just a single tenth of a lap. Behind him Ray and his new Truspeed controller was second by virtue of a higher total than Paul Homewood who had exactly the same best of three score as Ray. Roy lined up fourth a further two laps back and just under a lap ahead of Paul Rose in fifth. Nick was just over half a lap back in sixth ahead of Steve, Martin and Aston. Both Steve and Aston seemed to be quickly getting to grips with the micros and put in some very respectable scores and laptimes.

Martin in red got off to a good start and found himself leading Aston in blue and Steve in white. Aston did well to hang on to the Steve and Martin for the first half of the race but dropped back in the later phase of the race. He was clearly improving all the time though posting a very fast 5.067 laptime and beating all of his heat scores with an impressive 28.2 laps. Ahead of him his Dad Martin was being hunted down by Steve who had initially let him get away a bit. After closing Martin in, Steve and Martin were barely more than a foot apart apart for the second half of the race. Martin held his nerve though and went on to take the win by just three tenths of a lap.

Paul Rose took the early lead of the B Final from the red lane, ahead of Nick in white and Roy in blue. Martin suffered a popped motor in yellow and consequently dropped back before deciding to retire. A couple of uncharacteristic offs for Paul saw him fall back to third and left Nick with the lead. Paul put the hammer down though and fought his way back up before an off for Nick left him running just a few inches ahead of Roy. At the end of the three minutes Paul took the win by just under a lap with Nick just a whisker ahead of Roy.

Paul Homewood in red was the early leader of the A final ahead of pole sitter Al in blue and Ray in white. Paul Rose also suffered a popped motor in yellow despite efforts before the race to try and remedy the car’s achilles heal. As a result Paul quickly retired settling for fourth position but no doubt pleased to have claimed the fastest lap and highest score of the night during the B final. After a slightly hesitant start Al began to close Paul Homewood back down again and managed to pass him and eke out a narrow lead. In the closing stages of the race Paul began to put the pressure on Al again but came off giving him a bit of breathing space. With less than thirty seconds between what could have been Al’s first Micro win of the season, he binned it coming onto the start finish straight and unfortunately a marshalling fumble dropped him back to third place. Paul Homewood duly took his first Micro Scalextric win and broke Paul Rose’s streak of four back to back wins in the class. Ray took a tidy second ahead of a disappointed Al in third.

Super F1

Qualifying

Paul Homewood and his Mega G took his fourth straight pole of the Super F1 season, 2.7 laps ahead of Roy and his SRT. Ray’s Super G+ lined up third ahead of Paul Rose and his Mega G. Paul Rose took the fastest lap of the evening during qualy with a 3.825 narrowly beating Al’s 3.845. Al lined up behind Paul in fifth ahead of Steve and Nick. Martin and Aston completed the order with some borrowed cars that weren’t really up to fighting at the pointy end of proceedings. Despite this they both seemed to be enjoying the faster class and again managed to put in some competitive performances.

After a close start and nice three way battle, Martin in red emerged as the early leader of the C final. His son Aston in blue, wasn’t too far behind him and Nick in white didn’t seem particularly happy with his Mega G and dropped back to finish third. Up front Martin had pulled out a nice lead but an off on lap 25 left him only just ahead of Aston. The final minute of the race was pretty tense as he held onto his narrow lead and took the win by just under half a lap.

After his C final win, Martin hopped up to the unfavoured and quite tricky yellow lane. He held on well to the leaders in the early part of the race but dropped back as the race went on to finish fourth. Paul Rose in white emerged as the early leader following some offs for Al in red and Steve in blue. Once it looked like Paul was pretty uncatchable Al switched his attention to trying to beat Paul’s fastest lap time. He got within 6 hundredths of a second but crashed quite a lot and ended up finishing third after Steve snuck by him in the final few laps.

Paul Homewood in blue held a narrow lead over Ray in white for the first 40 seconds of the A final. Paul then hit what at first appeared to be car trouble but was then later suspected to be a track issue and dropped back to fourth before retiring. An off for Ray on lap 13 handed Roy in red the lead and briefly promoted Paul Rose in yellow to second. Ray caught and past Paul Rose to reclaim second but over the remainder of the race he couldn’t quite catch Roy despite a late off for the leader and eventual winner by three tenths of a lap.
