Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 5 Race Report

A dark and damp October evening saw 7 racers gather in Yelling for the penultimate round of the Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Championships. Joining the 6 regulars was Bill trying out HO racing for the first time although he had previous experience racing 1:32 and 1:24 slot cars.

The Track

Al had laid out a short fast track that was inspired by the Adelaide Parklands Circuit.

Micro Scalextric Club Class

Qualifying

After an exciting qaulifying session, Tony took pole from Al by just over two laps. Despite taking the highest score of the class with 44.0 laps in red and the fastest lap with a 3.732, Paul Rose found himself third let down by his white and yellow scores. Nick lined up fourth ahead of Ray and Roy who were only separated by a single tenth of a lap. Bill took the final slot on the grid but set some competitive scores in both red and blue and also took the second fastest lap in the class.

For the first 40 seconds of the B final, there was very little to choose between Nick in blue, Ray in red and Roy in white. Bill in the yellow lane (which seemed to be the least favoured) dropped back from the front runners but persevered with the car to finish the race. Offs for Roy and Ray gave Nick a little breathing space up front but it wasn’t long before Ray was hounding Nick again. Despite the pressure from Ray, Nick carried on to take the win from Ray, Roy and Bill.

Tony took the early lead in the A final in the blue lane. Al wasn’t far behind him in red though and Nick wasn’t far behind Al in white either. Paul Rose quickly regretted his choice of the yellow lane as he dropped back and eventually retired on lap 24. An off for Tony on lap 5 handed the lead to Al and left Tony dicing for second with Nick. Tony seemed to have a bit more pace than Nick though and as the race progressed he pulled away from Nick and began to catch Al. Pushing hard Tony came off on lap 27 prevented him from getting too near Al. A late off for Al on lap 35 put Tony back within striking distance but Al held on to take his first win in the class this season.

Super F1

Qualifying

An assured performance from Paul Rose saw him take pole with his Mega G by eight tenths of a lap from Tony and his Super G+. Tony took the fastest lap of the quali with a mighty 2.752 and was just under two laps ahead of Al in third. Ray lined up fourth ahead of Nick. After Roy’s new SRT toasted its arm in his first heat, he switched to a Mega G that wasn’t much to his liking and found himself sixth ahead of Bill who was getting to grips with an SRT borrowed from Al.

For the B final Roy broke out his best SRT that he had apparently been saving… Despite a few offs from the yellow lane he held the lead for most of the race and took the win from Nick in blue, Ray in red and Bill in white.

After warming up in the B FInal Roy was firmly in the groove in the hop up white lane and set off at blistering pace. Behind him Paul Rose was give it everything he had and despite improving on his heat score in red by almost two laps, he still found himself almost five laps behind Roy as the race finished. Behind them Al and Tony had a good dice for third. A string of offs for Tony in the blue lane in the final minute of the race eventually gave Al in yellow the final podium spot.
