F1 Tyco and Modified Round 2 Race Report

The Track

For round 2 of the Tyco F1 and Modified Championship, Al and Papa H set up figure of 8 track using Al’s newly designed bridge supports.

Qualifying

With just 6 people on the grid, qualifying didn’t take too long and it was Paul Homewood who took pole position from Paul Rose by 2.2 laps. Steve was driving well and pipped Al to third by a single tenth of a lap. New face Ray quickly got to grips with the Tyco club cars and put in some very respectable scores to come in fifth ahead of Roy in sixth.

With the low turn out and the tracks requirement for three and half marshals it was decided to race 3 drivers per final with no hop up. Al took the early lead of the B final from the blue lane with Roy hot on his heels in white. An early off for Al handed Roy the lead and try as he might Al couldn’t do anything but maintain the gap. Pushing harder and harder Al came off again at the start of the final minute giving Roy some breathing space. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for Roy and a couple of late offs allowed Al to sneak past and take the win by just over half a lap. Ray couldn’t quite match their pace but put in a consistent drive in the red lane to improve on his previous best heat score and make a very promising first impression during his first race evening.

The first 25 seconds of the A final saw the two Pauls dicing together for the lead. Paul Homewood was first to blink in blue, letting Paul Rose take the lead before he left the white lane to give Papa H back the lead. Paul Rose seemed to have a slight edge on absolute pace and begin reeling in his rival before an off dropped him back again. Paul Rose then really put the hammer down setting the fastest F1 lap of the night and gradually closing up the gap over the middle minute of the race. Finally as Paul Rose was drawing up behind Paul Homewood, Papa H had a big off which allowed Paul Rose to storm off and take the win. Steve in red couldn’t match the Pauls’ pace but seemed pleased enough to take the bottom step on the podium.

Qualifying

Paul Rose’s MR1 might not have had the straight-line pace of Al’s but through the twisty bits of the circuit he seemed far more in control than Al and racked up some big scores. Spending more time than he was used to hitting the barriers around the circuit, Al was finding his car to be surprisingly fragile and had a few pickup issues followed by the loss of one in the red lane that seriously hurt his score in that lane and left him 2.9 laps behind pole sitter Paul Rose. Paul Homewood took the third spot on the grid with a typically cool performance and Ray lined up fourth after a great drive with Al’s second MR1 that he had been loaned. Steve and Roy completed the order taking 5th and 6th.

Ray took the early lead of the B Final from the blue lane and was kept pretty honest by Steve in white for the first phase of the race. The A final was all over for Al in red after just couple of laps when a big off track excursion caused him to lose both pickups. By the time he had found and refitted them Paul Rose in blue was gone and Paul Homewood running second in white was also completely out of touch. Al continued round and took the fastest lap of the night but any time he made up was just as quickly lost by a series of offs that left him a very distant third by the end of the race. Up front Paul Rose sauntered home to take the first double win of the 2014 season.

Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 1 Race Report

After securing all three trophies of SCHORC’s second race series for the second season in a row, Paul Rose was no doubt hoping to extend that record. With the emergence of Roy’s truly super SRT in Super F1 and with the Homewoods joining the series for 2014 the defence of his titles was set to get more tricky…

The Track

Nick’s first solo track design was an interesting circuit with a challenging technical section with a pair of alternate hairpins. It also featured some nice flowing bends and proved to be well balanced between the competing chassis in Super F1.

The track

Qualifying

The pair of hairpins caused a fair bit of trouble in qualifying with people flying off in all directions. Al managed to stay out of trouble and avoid getting caught up in anyone else’s accidents here and that no doubt helped him take pole. Paul Rose was just 1.8 laps behind him and also took the fastest lap of the class with a 4.270 in the yellow lane which was unusually the fastest. Nick took the last guaranteed spot in the A final just two tenths of lap behind Paul. Paul Homewood acquitted himself well for his first time driving the Micros and lined up in fourth a lap ahead of Roy in fifth. John and Tony completed the grid in sixth and seventh respectively..

B Final

Roy took the red lane for the B final and after taking the early lead, he didn’t let go of it and took the win from Paul Homewood in yellow by just over a lap. John in blue took third after a spell of holding second in the latter phase of the race. Tony was running nicely in P2 for the early phase of the race before he a big off dropped him back to fourth and he decided to retire.

A Final

Al in yellow and Paul Rose in red diced for the early lead of the A final before Al managed to pull out a small lead. An off on lap 8 caused his motor to pop up and the fast but ultimately unreliable yellow car was off the track for nearly 20 seconds while Al jiggled the motor back into place. Meanwhile Paul drove off in to the distance to take the win followed 2.8 laps later by Roy in blue. Al and Nick had a good battle for third with Al eventually taking the position and at least salvaging a podium after his incident.

Qualifying

With Roy and his SRT being firm favourites going into Quali, it was a slight surprise when Paul Homewood took pole from him by nearly 10 laps. Nick again took third place and was just over a half a lap behind him in fourth. Reigning champion Paul Rose wasn’t entirely happy with his car for much of the session but salvaged fifth ahead of Tony and John.

Tony quickly decided he wasn’t very keen on the yellow lane and retired. With the yellow lane vacant John decided hop in it for a more pleasant drive to third.

Scout Race Night

SCHORC hosted a special race night for the 1st Southoe and Buckden Scout group. With 22 racers on the grid it was a busy night as a mixture of leaders, Explorers, Scouts and Cubs raced around a fast track based loosely on the classic Monza circuit.

2014-01-29 18.28.30

After a bit of practice getting to grips with the club Tycos, the heats got underway. With such a big turn out, it was decided to run 2 minute heats and no finals.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the racing and some real competitive spirit began to emerge as the racing went on. There were some fantastic on track battles and as people started to get to hang of driving the club Tycos, the scores started to build up. Leader Steve took top honours with the best overall score of 74.4 , and fastest lap of 4.101s. He shared the highest single heat score of 25.5 with Jason and junior Finn managed a very impressive 24.8. Tom was overall top junior with 66.5 and Harry was the fastest junior with a lap of 4.137.

F1 Tyco and Modified Round 1 Race Report

The SCHORC 2014 Season kicked off with 9 racers on the grid in the Yelling for F1 Tyco and Modified classes. With both classes reduced from 12 to 6 rounds this season for the first time, it was time to get out on track and start bagging points.

The Track

Tony had laid out a long and fast track to start the season with a couple of very long straights and a nice mixture of bends in between.

F1 A Final Cars

Qualifying

Paul Rose took the first F1 pole of the season by 1.6 laps from John. John’s car had monster straight line speed but looked a bit of handful in the bends. Nick lined up third just half a lap ahead of Roy who was a lap ahead of Al. Paul Homewood was just 0.2 laps behind Al but 0.9 laps ahead of Tony. Craig lined up 8th ahead of Steve who completed the grid.

C Final

Craig held the early lead from the red lane, following offs for Tony in white and Steve in blue. Finding himself last and unsatisfied with his car Tony retired before hunting out another car to complete the race. Craig went on to take the win from Steve by just over a lap.

F1 C Final

B Final

A good start by Paul Homewood in red saw him hold the early lead from Al in white. Roy in Blue was keeping pace with them early on until an off dropped him back a bit. However a crash on lap 11 sent Paul down to second and left him back with Roy and only just ahead of Craig who had been lagging behind following an early off from the yellow lane. Al held the lead to the end and was surprised to find Roy just a single tenth behind him after a concerted charge through the second half of the race. Paul finished a lap and half behind Roy and a few laps ahead of Craig.

F1 B Final

A Final

The tricky hop up yellow lane quickly got the better of Al and left him trailing in fourth. Up front there wasn’t much separating Paul Rose in blue, Nick in red and John in white. John undoubtedly had the fastest car and set the fastest F1 lap of the evening by nearly a quarter of a second. However a series of off track excursions saw him drop steadily back. An off for Nick then left Paul with a good cushion that he was able to manage for the remainder of the race. Behind him the mid-race threeway squabble for second was won by Nick who then nibbled away at Paul’s lead but ended up finishing just over a lap down. Al looked pleased with the bottom step on the podium and John seemed happy enough with fourth, his highest F1 finish to date.

Qualifying

With the Tycos safely back in the boxes, it was time to break out the Mods. Al didn’t seem very happy with his driving and seemed to be throwing the car off the track more than usual. Despite this he just managed to pip a more composed looking Nick to pole position by three tenths of a lap. Paul Homewood lined up third on the grid followed by John and his Lifelike T. Roy and his SRT took fifth ahead of Craig, Tony and Steve. Paul Rose found himself at the back of the grid after enduring a pretty miserable qualifying session. He suffered throughout with reliability issues that were only traced to a failing controller wire as he made his way to the grid for the C final.

201401_Mod_Q

C Final

With a borrowed controller, Paul Rose took a pretty straightforward victory in the C Final. Steve finished behind him and ahead of his brother Tony who wasn’t feeling quite himself or racing with his usual flair.

B Final

John seemed very comfortable with his Lifelike in the blue lane and drove a perfect race to take the B final win by 3 laps. An early off from yellow for Paul Rose left him with it all to do but he managed to fight his way back up to claim second. Craig in white kept pace with John early on before a series of crashes put him right back. Towards the end of the race he pulled back some time on Paul and finished third half a lap behind him. Roy also kept with John early on from the red lane before dropping back and eventually finishing fourth.

Mod B Final

A Final

Based on qualifying it looked the A final was going to be a two way fight between Al in blue and Nick in white. Indeed the start of the race saw very little separating their cars as they pulled away from Paul Homewood in red and John in yellow. Al breathed a visible sigh of relief when Nick came off 40 seconds in to the race. Al had probably been fearing a repeat of the previous month’s A final when they were neck and neck for almost the entire final with Nick coming out on top in the final seconds… A couple more offs for Nick gave John in third the sight of second place, and a couple of offs for Al kept Nick within striking distance for the lead, but in the end the running order didn’t change again. Al took the win by just over a lap from Nick, with John third taking his best mod result to date. Paul Homewood rolled in fourth not looking massively pleased and puzzling over the problem of revitalising his slightly off the boil mod.

Following several people dropping out at the last minute, the final round of the SCHORC season saw just 4 members taking to the grid.

Micro Scalextric Club Class

With just 4 people in attendance, it was considered too difficult to run adequately marshaled finals and it was decided that the result of the heats would decide the finishing order. With the highest score in each lane, Paul Rose took the win by over seven laps from his Championship rival Tony. Roy finished third ahead of Al who took some consolation from bagging the fastest lap of the night with the micros.

Super F1

Roy’s new SRT continued to look like the class of the Super F1 field. Several times during the heats it looked like other cars could keep with him, but then Roy dropped the hammer and effortlessly zipped off, pulling away at a rate of several tenths per lap. Roy duly took his second Super F1 of the season along with the fastest lap of the night. At the half way point in quali Paul Rose had two tenths of a lap on his rival Tony, but difficult heats in white and blue for Paul allowed Tony to take second place, and left Paul third. After damaging his Mega G during free practice, Al ran his SRT instead which proved to be someway off the pace leaving him a distant fourth.

With Al leading the championship, Paul Rose knew his best chance to take the trophy was if he could take the win and fastest lap with Al finishing no higher than third…

After taking 3 scores in the fifties Al thought he had probably done enough and so retired from his final lane. Paul Rose did much the same but because he realised he hadn’t done enough to out qualify Al. His suspicions were correct and Al took pole from Paul by just over five laps. Al and Nick continued to race for the lead just a few inches apart for the duration of the race. The lead changed hands several times but neither of them could pull out a gap of more than a foot or two. Although Al knew he had now sealed the Modified championship he was very keen to take the last win of the season and in the final seconds of the race with Nick just ahead of him he pushed just a bit too hard and binned his car. Nick continued on to take the highest score of the night and his maiden Mod win in fine style. Round 5 Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Race Report

The Track

To accommodate the expected lower than normal attendance, Tony had constructed a track that could be marshaled by just two people. Despite being a relatively simple track, it proved fun to drive and produced some exciting racing over the course of the evening.

Super F1

Qualifying

The short fast circuit proved very entertaining when the faster Super F1 cars took to the track. With lap times getting down towards the two second barrier, there was certainly no time to relax!

Roy’s new SRT had looked good during the previous week’s Mod class, but under an F1 body it was a different beast. Roy produced one of the most dominant qualifying displays in recent memory, monstering his way to pole by a massive 24 laps from his nearest rival Tony. Despite the huge gap to Roy, Tony was no doubt pleased to find himself 2.5 laps ahead of his championship rival Paul Rose. Jim, Al and Bruce finished off the grid.

SF1 Cars B Final

The B final produced an unusually spectacular race, with Al in red and Jim in blue going absolutely toe to toe for the seconds before their cars came together in the fast sweepers of the first sector. Keen to continue the battle on fair terms they both waited until both their cars had been marshaled back on to the track before recommencing the battle. Bruce in white had been fractionally ahead of them until an early off sent him back to third so he swept past both of them while they were off the track to retake the lead. Al and Jim were soon back on him though and the battle for the lead became a three way fight. A series of offs for all three drivers in the next couple of minutes kept things very interesting. Al pulled out a small lead but his final off handed the lead to Jim. In the closing stages of the race a small off for Jim sent him back to second before finally a bigger off left him third. Al went on to take the win by just over a lap from Bruce.

Tony in red did a very creditable job of taking the fight to Roy in blue by holding the lead for the first 30 seconds of the A final. Tony was driving the wheels off his car to keep ahead of Roy so it wasn’t massively surprising when Tony came off and Roy took the lead and disappeared off up the track. Al in yellow and Paul in white had a good fight over third place, but ahead Roy rocketed home to victory and took the win by 7 laps from Tony. Tony was no doubt pleased to close the championship gap on Paul, and Paul was probably relieved to finish third at least minimising the number of points Tony had closed in on him in this tightly fought championship.

With both the Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Championships to be decided at the final round next month it should be an exciting meet.

Offs for first Tony and then Nick jiggled the order up nicely until it was Paul who found himself ahead of Tony and Nick. Nick seemed to suffer worst from the lack of marshals and had to marshal his own car at least once which resulted in Al hitting his abandoned controller. While this diminished Al’s lead slightly, he still went on to take a comfortable win by three laps from Paul.
