Qualifying

With just 6 people on the grid, qualifying didn’t take too long and it was Paul Homewood who took pole position from Paul Rose by 2.2 laps. Steve was driving well and pipped Al to third by a single tenth of a lap. New face Ray quickly got to grips with the Tyco club cars and put in some very respectable scores to come in fifth ahead of Roy in sixth.

With the low turn out and the tracks requirement for three and half marshals it was decided to race 3 drivers per final with no hop up. Al took the early lead of the B final from the blue lane with Roy hot on his heels in white. An early off for Al handed Roy the lead and try as he might Al couldn’t do anything but maintain the gap. Pushing harder and harder Al came off again at the start of the final minute giving Roy some breathing space. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for Roy and a couple of late offs allowed Al to sneak past and take the win by just over half a lap. Ray couldn’t quite match their pace but put in a consistent drive in the red lane to improve on his previous best heat score and make a very promising first impression during his first race evening.

The first 25 seconds of the A final saw the two Pauls dicing together for the lead. Paul Homewood was first to blink in blue, letting Paul Rose take the lead before he left the white lane to give Papa H back the lead. Paul Rose seemed to have a slight edge on absolute pace and begin reeling in his rival before an off dropped him back again. Paul Rose then really put the hammer down setting the fastest F1 lap of the night and gradually closing up the gap over the middle minute of the race. Finally as Paul Rose was drawing up behind Paul Homewood, Papa H had a big off which allowed Paul Rose to storm off and take the win. Steve in red couldn’t match the Pauls’ pace but seemed pleased enough to take the bottom step on the podium.

Qualifying

Paul Rose’s MR1 might not have had the straight-line pace of Al’s but through the twisty bits of the circuit he seemed far more in control than Al and racked up some big scores. Spending more time than he was used to hitting the barriers around the circuit, Al was finding his car to be surprisingly fragile and had a few pickup issues followed by the loss of one in the red lane that seriously hurt his score in that lane and left him 2.9 laps behind pole sitter Paul Rose. Paul Homewood took the third spot on the grid with a typically cool performance and Ray lined up fourth after a great drive with Al’s second MR1 that he had been loaned. Steve and Roy completed the order taking 5th and 6th.

Ray took the early lead of the B Final from the blue lane and was kept pretty honest by Steve in white for the first phase of the race. After a couple of incidents for Steve, Ray was reasonably clear and able to cruise home and take the win. After a good start in red Roy had a succession of offs that left him third.

The A final was all over for Al in red after just couple of laps when a big off track excursion caused him to lose both pickups. By the time he had found and refitted them Paul Rose in blue was gone and Paul Homewood running second in white was also completely out of touch. Al continued round and took the fastest lap of the night but any time he made up was just as quickly lost by a series of offs that left him a very distant third by the end of the race. Up front Paul Rose sauntered home to take the first double win of the 2014 season.
