Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 2 Race Report

A warm and bright spring evening saw 6 racers take to the track in Yelling with Ray returning for his second evening of racing at SCHORC.

The Track

Al was on track setup duties again this month and was again ably assisted by Paul Homewood. Al designed a track loosely based on the Bahrain International Circuit where the 1:1 F1 circus is heading this weekend. With no talk of fuel flow meters, tyre and fuel saving or aero balance, racing got under way with the club Micro XJ220s.

Qualifying

Pushing the club micros a tad harder than everyone else Paul Rose took the highest score in each lane and claimed pole by 3.7 laps. After complaining that he didn’t like the club cars for the entire session, Paul Homewood was surprised to find himself in second 4 tenths of a lap ahead of Al in third. Al pipped Tony to third by just a single tenth of a lap and Tony was the only driver other than pole sitter Paul Rose to dip below a 6 second lap in qualifying. John lined up fifth ahead of returning visitor Ray who was sampling the micros for the first time.

Once again the yellow car was the fastest but was also on the trickiest lane being on the inside for the tightest bend of the course turn 6. Tony’s choice of yellow didn’t pay off as he struggled for consistency and retired from third position after just 6 laps. Ahead of him John was pounding solidly round in blue but being pursued by Ray in white who was playing catch up after an early off. Over the course of the race Ray gradually reeled John in, finishing just a single tenth of a lap behind him on track at the end of the race.

Paul Rose shot off the grid in blue to take the early lead, an early off for Paul Homewood in white left him third until Al flew off into the barrier at turn 3. Paul Rose was next to crash leaving all three drivers back in a group together. Paul Rose then started to pull out a lead again leaving Paul Homewood in second and Al third. That ordered remained for the duration of the race with Paul Rose going on to take the win, fastest lap and highest score in the class with a mighty 29.1 laps.

Super F1

Qualifying

Paul Homewood to pole position with his Mega G by a comfortable 5.2 laps from Paul Rose. Tony took the fastest lap in qualifying with his SUper G+ and lined up third on the grid. Using one of Paul Rose’s spare chassis Ray took fourth 0.4 laps ahead of Al in fifth. John lined up sixth but was enjoying driving his Mega G more than usual having flipped one of his magnets to put it into the high downforce configuration.

The B final saw Al in white leading a tightly bunched field of Ray in blue and John in red. An off on lap four sent Al back to third but a marginal pace advantage allowed him to claw his way back to front and then pull out a one lap advantage. Behind him Ray and John were having a proper battle over second place and a late off for John allowed Ray to take that place by just under half a lap.

After a good start, a run of poor early laps from Paul Homewood in blue left him distinctly on the back foot. Paul Rose was out in front in the white lane with Tony in red just behind him. Paul Homewood then set about banging in some consistently fast laps that enabled him to first pass Tony who was struggling for consistency and then start to close in Paul Rose. Some laps Paul Rose could match Paul Homewood’s times and the gap stayed the same, other laps Paul Homewood would take a nibble out of Paul Rose’s lead. An off for Paul Rose on lap 23 left Paul Homewood right on his tail and a couple of further offs in the closing stages of the race allowed Paul Homewood to charge past and take the win.
