F1 Tyco and Modified Round 2 Race Report

Just five regular SCHORC members gathered for the second round of the Tyco and Modified Championships, but they were joined by Father and Son Robbie and George who were giving HO racing a try for the first time.

The Track

Al had built a fairly straight forward power track that proved pretty well balanced across the lanes and hosted some excellent racing.

Qualifying

Birthday Boy Ray looked to be a safe bet for pole throughout quali and so it proved as he stormed to pole over twelve laps clear of his nearest rival Paul Rose. Roy was three laps behind Paul with Al a further 5.7 laps behind him in fourth. Tony finished fifth a further 3.2 laps behind Al. Robbie and George looked to be enjoying their first taste of HO racing and both set some respectable scores and laptimes lining up sixth and seventh respectively.

George made a fine start in the blue lane in his first final and was right at the front of the field for the first four laps. His father Robbie made a shakier start in yellow but capitalised on a couple offs from George to take third place. Al in white just held on to Tony in red for the first minute but after that he began to drop back unable to match Tony’s pace. Tony duly took the win from Al, Robbie and George.

After some exciting opening laps, Roy in red emerged as the early leader of the A final. Behind him Paul in white was just ahead of pole sitter Ray who had a few issues in the blue lane during the opening laps. Tony in the yellow hop up lane couldn’t stay with the rest of the pack and had to settle for fourth. After his troubled start Ray had settled into his groove and making the most of a couple of mistakes from his rivals, took the lead and proceeded to drive off up the road to take his first F1 Championship win by 3.6 laps. Behind his Paul and Roy had an extremely close battle for second place with Paul eventually coming out on top by just over a lap.

Mod

Qualifying

Al’s mod was looking on formidable form early on in quali until it suddenly started flying off the track as soon as it saw a corner. Al swapped to his spare car and managed enough laps with that to still secure pole despite his confidence taking quite a knock. Behind him Tony was looking fast, taking the highest lap count in both the blue and yellow lanes and sweeping to the second spot on the grid. After enduring some difficult months with his Mod, Paul was starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. A new motor and some tweaks to his pick-up springs were starting to yield some results and his car’s speed continued to improve throughout qualifying leaving him third. Roy and his SRT lined up fourth ahead of Ray and his MR1 in fifth. The club Turbos were off the pace on such a fast track but Robbie and George looked to be getting some useful experience of the higher downforce class and lined up sixth and seventh again.

Roy went off like a rocket in the blue lane, Ray was hot on his heels for the first six laps but then dropped back leaving Roy to take the win by nearly seven laps. Behind them George and Robbie were having a great tussle for third. The place changed hands several times over the course of the race and at the end it was George who emerged victorious beating his father by 1.2 laps!

Tracing his issues in Quali to a bent rear axle Al fitted a spare to his car for the final. A run of early offs left Al a distant fourth in the red lane, ahead of him Paul was out in the lead in white with Tony in blue behind him. Roy in yellow was running third. A few offs for Paul moved him down to second and then briefly third place. Tony made the most of this pulling out a reasonable lead. Behind them Al had past Roy and briefly moved up to second before Paul got himself back in to gear and retook second before starting to chase down Tony. A big off for Tony left Paul right behind him for twenty seconds until Paul came off and had to settle for second. Tony duly took his first win of 2015 from Paul, Al and Roy.
