F1 Tyco and Modified Round 4 Race Report

SCHORC’s July meeting was held on a warm summer evening with 6 racers gathering in Yelling for the fourth round of the F1 and Modified Championships.

The Track

Al and Paul had collaborated on the track design and had come up with a fast but quite technical anti-clockwise track.

Paul used no fewer than six 6 inch bends to create the tricky Snail Bend. Oddly more people seemed to be caught out by Al’s wiggly chicane at the other end of the track though.

Qualifying

Ray took his fourth straight F1 pole, continuing his 100% lock out of the top F1 grid position this season. Nick lined up in second place 6.2 laps behind from Ray and 0.6 laps ahead of Al in third. Roy took the fourth grid spot, just a single tenth behind Al. Paul endured a difficult session and ended up fifth ahead of Steve who completed the grid.

Initially holding a narrow lead from the blue lane, consistency over the course of the race allowed Roy to pull out a four lap lead from Paul in white. Steve took a while to get into his groove and found himself several laps back in red finishing third, behind Roy and Paul.

A confident start for Ray in blue put him narrowly ahead of Al in red and Nick in white. An early off left Nick chasing the leaders but a series of offs for Al late in the first minute dropped him back behind Nick. An off for Ray then left Nick right on his tail. Ray kept his cool though and soon found himself cruising round by himself after several more offs sent Nick back and left him only just ahead of Al. The closing few minutes of the race saw Nick hold second place by a single tenth from Al while Ray took his second F1 win of the season by 3 laps.

Qualifying

With the blue lane seeming to offer a significant advantage for the finals, qualifying was a tense affair. The battle for pole ended with Al just 0.6 laps ahead of Paul. Shaky runs in red and yellow for Al had left the door open for Paul and he was disappointing to find himself second. Ray lined up third after running Paul Homewood’s old Marchon which despite needing some TLC was still a formidable drive. Nick’s Marchon wasn’t looking on its usual pace and he found himself fourth ahead of Steve and Roy.

Roy lead the early stages of the B final from the red lane, before a big off dropped him to third. Steve in white fell slightly behind Nick in blue until Nick lost a bunch of time on lap 5. Finding himself with a comfortable lead, Steve was able to easily take the win. Behind him Nick was gradually eroding Roy’s lead until a mistake from Roy handed Nick second place. Sadly for Nick, he came off in the dying moments of the race and Roy pipped him to second place but a matter of a foot.

After some close opening laps, Al emerged as the early leader in blue. Behind him Paul in white and Ray in red were having a good dice for second and gradually dropping back from Al. Just over half way through the race Al banged in the fastest lap of the night with a 3.571. With several laps in hand and wondering if he could squeeze a bit more out of his car, Al pushed a bit too hard and lost it going through his chicane. Al’s car was quickly returned to the track but it could only manage to crawl down the back straight. By the time Al has found and fixed his car’s jammed pick-up, he was a distant third place. Paul duly took the win by 4.3 laps from Ray with Al just over lap further back in third.
