F1 Tyco and Modified Round 3 Race Report

A windy May evening saw 7 SCHORCers gather in Yelling for Round 3 of the Tyco F1 and Modified Championships.

The Track

Al had laid out a tight, technical track based on the Formula E variant of the Monaco circuit. The tight 6 inch bends scattered around the track kept everyone on their toes and made it a real handling track.

Qualifying

Some great scores including a mighty 42.7 laps in white, propelled Ray to the his 3rd F1 pole position on the bounce. Paul Rose was just 2 laps behind Ray with Al a further 4.3 laps further back in third. A good drive from Steve saw him pip Nick to the fourth grid spot by one lap. Behind Nick was Bill leaving Tony at the back of the grid.

Following some tense opening laps, it was Nick in blue who emerged as the early leader of the B final. Tony in the unfavoured yellow lane wasn’t far behind Nick and Steve in white was only just behind Tony. A big off for Bill in red left him behind the front runners and he had to settle for fourth. An off for Tony on lap 7 handed second place to his brother Steve and left him to briefly take the lead on lap 18 when Nick left the track. Steve came off not long after Nick though and Nick retook the lead. Tony was now right with Steve and he seemed to settle into his groove and gradually pull away from his brother over the final minute of the race. A close finish saw Nick take the win with 40.2 laps with Tony just 0.9 laps behind him and Steve just a further 0.4 laps behind Tony with Bill completing the order in fourth.

Paul in red and polesitter Ray in white both got off to storming starts in the A final. Al in blue and Nick in yellow both had an early off that left them playing catch up. Nick retired quite early in the race not wanting to get in the way of the action unfolding at the front. Paul and Ray were both racing on the limit and caught up in what descended into a slightly scrappy battle with both of them leaving the track several times. So intent were they in fighting each other, they failed to notice that Al had passed them both and taken the lead. Despite both Ray and Paul having superior one lap pace to Al, neither could catch him. Al took the win with 42.1 laps, 1.7 laps ahead of Ray in second who finished just a single tenth of a lap ahead of Paul in third.

Pole sitter Al got off to a slow start in red and pushing to make up lost ground he had an early off, this left Tony in yellow with the lead ahead of Paul in blue. A scrappy series of laps for everyone left Tony in third with Al and Paul vying for the lead. Paul matched Al’s pace until the mid point of the race where he started to drop back. Focusing on taking the fastest lap Paul had a few more offs until he found himself battling with Tony for second. At the end of the race Al took the win with over 7 laps in hand and rather cheekily snatched the fastest lap from Paul on his final lap. After a tense final few laps, Tony edged Paul to second by just a single tenth.
