F1 Tyco and Modified Round 5 Race Report

A pleasent September evening saw 7 racers gather in Yelling for round 5 of the Tyco F1 and Modified Championships.

The Track

Al had put together a track based on the current Monza layout. The modern chicanes proved tricky particularly the first and second ones that had to be negotiated with care due to their tight 6 inch bends.

Qualifying

In a surprise move Al took pole with a new Tyco he had just purchased from Jim. Paul Rose was just a single tenth behind Al but over 6 laps clear of Jim in third. Jim was making a welcome return to the grid while selling off many of his cars so he used the club Tycos which were once again proving to be right on the pace when driven well. John Chell looked to be enjoying the circuit with a car well suited to the long straights and he lined up fourth less than a lap behind Jim. Nick took the fifth slot ahead of Tony and Steve. Tony put in the fastest F1 lap of the night on the blue lane that was more or less universal agreed to be the lane of choice.

Tony took the early lead of the B final from the red lane, before an off handed the lead to Nick in white who was being closely pursued by John in blue. After a tense battle it was John who took the B final win by just under two laps from Nick. Tony finished third and Steve retired from the much unloved yellow lane after 23 laps.

Paul Rose took the early inititive from the white lane leaving pole sitter Al in second in the blue lane. An early off for Paul left Jim in the red lane in second place and Al in first. Paul then put the hammer down, passed Jim for second and set about chasing Al down. Up front Al found himself with a narrow lead and Paul Rose steaming up behind him. Al didn’t seem to be taking any risks and was driving well within himself. This meant Paul kept catching him relatively easily but every time Paul caught him, he managed to come off. After 3 tense minutes Al breathed a sigh of relief taking his first F1 win of the season by less than half a lap from Paul. Jim took a tidy third place ahead of John Chell who rolled in fourth in yellow.

Mod

Qualifying

After an intense qualifying session with the Mods thundering around the Temple of Speed, Al again found himself on pole. After loosing a fair bit of time in the white lane with a popped rear axle after misjudging (or rather forgetting) his braking point heading into the Parabolica, he was glad to have banked a decent score early on in the yellow lane. Behind him Tony’s 917 bodied Marchon was looking formidable and Tony was pleased to find himself only just over half a lap behind Al. Paul Rose didn’t quite hook up his cars usual performance in the red lane and ended up just over nine laps back in third. Jim lined up fourth driving the battered green F40 infamously named “Christine” that he had borrowed from Nick. Steve took the 5th spot just ahead of John and Nick completed the order.

Nick surprised everyone by taking the early lead of the B final from the hardest lane, yellow. Jim and Christine in blue were right behind him though and John in white was also in the mix. An early off for Steve in red left him a bit further back but never too far from the action. A big off for Nick on lap 7 handed the lead to Jim but an off for Jim on lap 13 left Nick right behind him again. For the next 14 laps there was very little between them until Jim came off again and Nick briefly took the lead before coming off again giving Jim the lead and a bit of breathing space. With Nick just over a lap down “Gentleman” Jim seemed to back off just a shade in the closing stages of the race to allow Nick back onto the lead lap. Meanwhile John in white had caught and passed Nick and was actually in second and closing in on Jim. As the race ended John’s car finished less than an inch behind Jim’s in what may have been the closest finish in SCHORC history.

After a close threeway battle in the opening 4 laps, Al was left out in front in the blue lane with Tony in red battling for second with Paul in white. Al went on to take a fairly straight forward victory and his second win of the evening. Tony’s second place marked his season’s best finish in Mod so far and Paul Rose finished third ahead of Jim.

With just one round of these Championships remaining, it looks like Paul Rose just needs to turn up to secure his first Tyco F1 title and after easing ahead in the Mod Championship Al just needs a good finish relative to Paul Rose to secure that trophy for the fourth consecutive season.

Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 4 Race Report

A warm August evening saw 9 racers gather in Yelling. Ray had brought along his son-in-law Martin and Martin’s young son Aston to join in the fun.

The Track

Al assisted by Paul Homewood and Nick, had built a fast figure of 8 type circuit that had two long straights and some fast sweeping bends along with one reasonably tight corner to keep things interesting.

After some closely fought battles during the heats, Al emerged on top to take pole by just a single tenth of a lap. Behind him Ray and his new Truspeed controller was second by virtue of a higher total than Paul Homewood who had exactly the same best of three score as Ray. Roy lined up fourth a further two laps back and just under a lap ahead of Paul Rose in fifth. Nick was just over half a lap back in sixth ahead of Steve, Martin and Aston. Both Steve and Aston seemed to be quickly getting to grips with the micros and put in some very respectable scores and laptimes.

Martin in red got off to a good start and found himself leading Aston in blue and Steve in white. Aston did well to hang on to the Steve and Martin for the first half of the race but dropped back in the later phase of the race. He was clearly improving all the time though posting a very fast 5.067 laptime and beating all of his heat scores with an impressive 28.2 laps. Ahead of him his Dad Martin was being hunted down by Steve who had initially let him get away a bit. After closing Martin in, Steve and Martin were barely more than a foot apart apart for the second half of the race. Martin held his nerve though and went on to take the win by just three tenths of a lap.

Paul Rose took the early lead of the B Final from the red lane, ahead of Nick in white and Roy in blue. Paul put the hammer down though and fought his way back up before an off for Nick left him running just a few inches ahead of Roy. At the end of the three minutes Paul took the win by just under a lap with Nick just a whisker ahead of Roy.

Paul Homewood in red was the early leader of the A final ahead of pole sitter Al in blue and Ray in white. Paul Rose also suffered a popped motor in yellow despite efforts before the race to try and remedy the car’s achilles heal. As a result Paul quickly retired settling for fourth position but no doubt pleased to have claimed the fastest lap and highest score of the night during the B final. After a slightly hesitant start Al began to close Paul Homewood back down again and managed to pass him and eke out a narrow lead. In the closing stages of the race Paul began to put the pressure on Al again but came off giving him a bit of breathing space. With less than thirty seconds between what could have been Al’s first Micro win of the season, he binned it coming onto the start finish straight and unfortunately a marshalling fumble dropped him back to third place. Paul Homewood duly took his first Micro Scalextric win and broke Paul Rose’s streak of four back to back wins in the class. Ray took a tidy second ahead of a disappointed Al in third.

Paul Rose took the fastest lap of the evening during qualy with a 3.825 narrowly beating Al’s 3.845. Al lined up behind Paul in fifth ahead of Steve and Nick. Martin and Aston completed the order with some borrowed cars that weren’t really up to fighting at the pointy end of proceedings. F1 Tyco and Modified Round 4 Race Report

The Track

For the July club meet, Al had put together a fast circuit with two long straights. The start finish straight led to a “dog bone” corner and the main straight led to a long tightening radius right hander. This then switched back to a tight left hander that opened up leading to a long fast S bend and the start finish straight. The switchback seemed to cause people with the most trouble as it was easy to carry to much speed from the fast entry to the long corner.

The Track

F1

Qualifying

Initially with only four racers present it was decided that finals wouldn’t be run and the qualifying order would be final. With Roy arrived halfway through quali it would have been possible to run finals but as the decision had already been made and agreed upon, it wasn’t changed.

A great drive from Tony secured him the top spot for the first time this season narrowly beating Ray by just three tenths of a lap. Ray and his Tyco were running very nicely though and he had the highest total score and also the biggest lapcount with a mighty 38.2 laps in red. Roy took third place 6.9 laps back but with the fastest F1 lap of the night. Paul Rose was fourth ahead of Al in fifth after they both struggled to get to grips with their new Truspeed controllers.

Qualifying

During free practice, Roy noticed that both Al and Paul were setting the driver station brakes control to the wrong setting for their new controllers. Once this was rectified the controllers started to perform properly and they both found them very much to their liking. Al found his Marchon far easier to tame through the lower speed bends and duly took the win along with a big score of 50.9 laps in blue and the fastest lap of the evening with a 3.273s. Paul Rose was second 6 laps behind Al and 11.3 laps ahead of Tony in third. Roy and his SRT took fourth ahead of Ray and his new Marchon that looked promising in the corners but lacked the straight line speed that this month’s track demanded.

Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 3 Race Report

A pleasant June evening saw 7 racers gather for the third round of Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1.

The Track

Ably assisted by Paul Homewood again, Al had designed a circuit vaguely based on The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve from Montreal Canada. After initially putting in the final chicane and Wall of Champions, Al decided it would be be impossible to marshall without obstructing the driver’s view and replaced it with a single long straight. The resulting track was fast and flowing and perhaps a welcome relief for some after last month’s track. The chicanes were fast and required just a slight lift to negotiate, so if you got them wrong you came off hard!

Qualifying

Continuing his dominance of the class, Paul Rose took pole by 2 laps from Al. Ray was just two tenths behind Al in third and Paul Homewood just a further tenth behind. Roy lined up fifth ahead of Steve and Tony.

During the heats, the slightest off would cause the motor of the yellow lane car to pop. To rectify this for the finals, it was glued in.

Paul Homewood had a cracking start in blue taking the early lead from Steve in white. An early off for Roy in red left him in third ahead of Tony in fourth who had jumped the start. By lap 9 Paul Homewood had pulled out a decent gap but an off left him with Roy right on his tail. For the next 130 seconds there was virtually nothing between them with Paul Homewood finishing just a few inches ahead at the end of breathtaking race. Following a jump start by Paul Rose, he found himself a lap down in the blue lane. First lap incidents for Al in white and Ray in red left Paul Homewood in the unfavoured yellow hop up lane with the lead. By one minute in Al had managed to close Paul Homewood down and Paul Rose was rapidly making up his lost lap despite an off. As the race progressed Al passed and begin to pull away from Paul Homewood. An off for Paul Homewood moved Paul Rose up to second and he continued to pile the pressure on Al. An off for Al at the hairpin handed Paul Rose a narrow lead. Al put in some of his fastest laps of the evening and closed the gap slightly but after another off at the hairpin, he had to settle for second. As Paul Rose was cruised to victory, a few offs for Paul Homewood allowed Ray to take 3rd from him in the closing moments.

The rest of the field were somewhat behind the two pace setters with Ray and his Super G+ taking best of the rest in third. Tony lined up fourth ahead of Al, Steve and Paul Rose. F1 Tyco and Modified Round 3 Race Report

The Track

For Round 3 of the Tyco F1 and Modified Championships Al had designed a mini-Monaco style track featuring some elevation change and the famous hairpin but missing the modern chicanes. Just like its 1:1 equivalent, the track was a very tricky drive and required 100% concentration. Unfortunately that divided opinion, while some drivers relished the challenge of the circuit, others didn’t enjoy it at all. There was however some general hilarity as cars flew off the track and into the “harbour”.

Qualifying

With the white and blue lanes being significantly easier to drive than red and yellow, it was vital to secure a good qualifying result to snag one of the good lanes. Track position was everything and making up places in the finals looked likely to be tricky…

Qualifying was surprisingly close with just 3.6 laps separating pole from 7th place. Paul Homewood has the honour of securing pole position by just 0.2 laps from Paul Rose who put in the fastest F1 lap of the night in the blue lane. Jim returning for his first race of the 2014 season was straight on the pace in third just half a lap back from pole. Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 1 Race Report

After securing all three trophies of SCHORC’s second race series for the second season in a row, Paul Rose was no doubt hoping to extend that record. With the emergence of Roy’s truly super SRT in Super F1 and with the Homewoods joining the series for 2014 the defence of his titles was set to get more tricky…

The Track

Nick’s first solo track design was an interesting circuit with a challenging technical section with a pair of alternate hairpins. It also featured some nice flowing bends and proved to be well balanced between the competing chassis in Super F1.

Qualifying

The pair of hairpins caused a fair bit of trouble in qualifying with people flying off in all directions. Al managed to stay out of trouble and avoid getting caught up in anyone else’s accidents here and that no doubt helped him take pole. Paul Rose was just 1.8 laps behind him and also took the fastest lap of the class with a 4.270 in the yellow lane which was unusually the fastest. Nick took the last guaranteed spot in the A final just two tenths of lap behind Paul. Paul Homewood acquitted himself well for his first time driving the Micros and lined up in fourth a lap ahead of Roy in fifth. John and Tony completed the grid in sixth and seventh respectively..

B Final

Roy took the red lane for the B final and after taking the early lead, he didn’t let go of it and took the win from Paul Homewood in yellow by just over a lap. John in blue took third after a spell of holding second in the latter phase of the race. Tony was running nicely in P2 for the early phase of the race before he a big off dropped him back to fourth and he decided to retire.

A Final

Al in yellow and Paul Rose in red diced for the early lead of the A final before Al managed to pull out a small lead. An off on lap 8 caused his motor to pop up and the fast but ultimately unreliable yellow car was off the track for nearly 20 seconds while Al jiggled the motor back into place. Meanwhile Paul drove off in to the distance to take the win followed 2.8 laps later by Roy in blue. Al and Nick had a good battle for third with Al eventually taking the position and at least salvaging a podium after his incident.

Super F1

Qualifying

With Roy and his SRT being firm favourites going into Quali, it was a slight surprise when Paul Homewood took pole from him by nearly 10 laps. Nick again took third place and was just over a half a lap behind him in fourth. Reigning champion Paul Rose wasn’t entirely happy with his car for much of the session but salvaged fifth ahead of Tony and John.

Paul Rose had the early lead in blue but Al wasn’t far behind him in red. A couple of small offs for Paul handed Al the lead on a couple of occasions but Paul’s pace was superior and after catching Al for the second time Al binned it leaving Paul to sail off and take the win. Tony quickly decided he wasn’t very keen on the yellow lane and retired. With the yellow lane vacant John decided hop in it for a more pleasant drive to third.

Paul Homewood stormed off the grid from the yellow lane and in to the lead. Roy couldn’t quite match his pace from the blue lane but wasn’t far behind him. Nick matched Roy’s pace from the red lane for the first 40 seconds of the race before a couple of offs dropped him back. Paul Rose usual a master of the white had a few too many offs at the tighter of the two hairpins before retiring. Up front Paul Homewood powered on to take the win by just over a lap from Roy.

Scout Race Night

SCHORC hosted a special race night for the 1st Southoe and Buckden Scout group. With 22 racers on the grid it was a busy night as a mixture of leaders, Explorers, Scouts and Cubs raced around a fast track based loosely on the classic Monza circuit.

2014-01-29 18.28.30

After a bit of practice getting to grips with the club Tycos, the heats got underway. With such a big turn out, it was decided to run 2 minute heats and no finals.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the racing and some real competitive spirit began to emerge as the racing went on. There were some fantastic on track battles and as people started to get to hang of driving the club Tycos, the scores started to build up. Leader Steve took top honours with the best overall score of 74.4 , and fastest lap of 4.101s. He shared the highest single heat score of 25.5 with Jason and junior Finn managed a very impressive 24.8. Tom was overall top junior with 66.5 and Harry was the fastest junior with a lap of 4.137.

F1 Tyco and Modified Round 1 Race Report

The SCHORC 2014 Season kicked off with 9 racers on the grid in the Yelling for F1 Tyco and Modified classes. With both classes reduced from 12 to 6 rounds this season for the first time, it was time to get out on track and start bagging points.

The Track

Tony had laid out a long and fast track to start the season with a couple of very long straights and a nice mixture of bends in between.

F1 A Final Cars

Qualifying

Paul Rose took the first F1 pole of the season by 1.6 laps from John. John’s car had monster straight line speed but looked a bit of handful in the bends. Nick lined up third just half a lap ahead of Roy who was a lap ahead of Al. Paul Homewood was just 0.2 laps behind Al but 0.9 laps ahead of Tony. Craig lined up 8th ahead of Steve who completed the grid.

C Final

Craig held the early lead from the red lane, following offs for Tony in white and Steve in blue. Finding himself last and unsatisfied with his car Tony retired before hunting out another car to complete the race. Craig went on to take the win from Steve by just over a lap.

F1 C Final

B Final

A good start by Paul Homewood in red saw him hold the early lead from Al in white. Roy in Blue was keeping pace with them early on until an off dropped him back a bit. However a crash on lap 11 sent Paul down to second and left him back with Roy and only just ahead of Craig who had been lagging behind following an early off from the yellow lane. Al held the lead to the end and was surprised to find Roy just a single tenth behind him after a concerted charge through the second half of the race. Paul finished a lap and half behind Roy and a few laps ahead of Craig.

F1 B Final

A Final

The tricky hop up yellow lane quickly got the better of Al and left him trailing in fourth. Up front there wasn’t much separating Paul Rose in blue, Nick in red and John in white. John undoubtedly had the fastest car and set the fastest F1 lap of the evening by nearly a quarter of a second. However a series of off track excursions saw him drop steadily back. An off for Nick then left Paul with a good cushion that he was able to manage for the remainder of the race. Behind him the mid-race threeway squabble for second was won by Nick who then nibbled away at Paul’s lead but ended up finishing just over a lap down. Al looked pleased with the bottom step on the podium and John seemed happy enough with fourth, his highest F1 finish to date.

Mod

Mod A Final Cars

Qualifying

With the Tycos safely back in the boxes, it was time to break out the Mods. Al didn’t seem very happy with his driving and seemed to be throwing the car off the track more than usual. Despite this he just managed to pip a more composed looking Nick to pole position by three tenths of a lap. Paul Homewood lined up third on the grid followed by John and his Lifelike T. Roy and his SRT took fifth ahead of Craig, Tony and Steve. Paul Rose found himself at the back of the grid after enduring a pretty miserable qualifying session. He suffered throughout with reliability issues that were only traced to a failing controller wire as he made his way to the grid for the C final.

201401_Mod_Q

C Final

With a borrowed controller, Paul Rose took a pretty straightforward victory in the C Final. Steve finished behind him and ahead of his brother Tony who wasn’t feeling quite himself or racing with his usual flair.

B Final

John seemed very comfortable with his Lifelike in the blue lane and drove a perfect race to take the B final win by 3 laps. An early off from yellow for Paul Rose left him with it all to do but he managed to fight his way back up to claim second. Craig in white kept pace with John early on before a series of crashes put him right back. Towards the end of the race he pulled back some time on Paul and finished third half a lap behind him. Roy also kept with John early on from the red lane before dropping back and eventually finishing fourth.

Mod B Final

A Final

Based on qualifying it looked the A final was going to be a two way fight between Al in blue and Nick in white. Indeed the start of the race saw very little separating their cars as they pulled away from Paul Homewood in red and John in yellow. Al breathed a visible sigh of relief when Nick came off 40 seconds in to the race. Al had probably been fearing a repeat of the previous month’s A final when they were neck and neck for almost the entire final with Nick coming out on top in the final seconds… A couple more offs for Nick gave John in third the sight of second place, and a couple of offs for Al kept Nick within striking distance for the lead, but in the end the running order didn’t change again. Al took the win by just over a lap from Nick, with John third taking his best mod result to date. Paul Homewood rolled in fourth not looking massively pleased and puzzling over the problem of revitalising his slightly off the boil mod.
