F1 Tyco and Modified Round 6 Race Report

Six racers gathered on a dark and chilly November the fifth for some SCHORC style on track fireworks.

The Track

For the final round of the F1 and Modified Championships Al had laid out a fast sweeping track. The first sector was quite technical but still possible to go hammering through with the right level of commitment.

Due to the low turn out, finals were run in threes with no hop-ups. Tony stormed off in blue to take the early lead in the B final, leading Nick in white and Steve in red. A big off midway through the race left Tony with plenty to do in order to retake the lead. He did however catch Nick and they had a good dice in the closing stages of the race. A last moment off for Nick left him only a single tenth ahead of Steve as Tony took the win.

Paul Rose lead the A final off the line in the white lane ahead of Ray in blue and Al in red. Early offs for Al and Paul left Ray out front but after a succession of offs for everyone things were pretty close at the mid point of the race. Sensing an opertunity Al started pushing a bit too hard and a couple of big offs left him with the bottom step of the podium. Ahead of him Paul and Ray continued to battle right to the end of the race with the lead changing hands several times. In the end Paul took the win by half a lap from Ray with Al just under a lap further back from Ray.

Early on Tony held a narrow lead in white from his brother Steve in Red, but as the race went on Steve couldn’t maintain Tony’s pace and began to drop back. After a tentative start, Al in blue quickly eased past Paul in white to lead the A final. A big off for Al on lap 12 allowed Paul to retake the lead. Al began to close the gap back up, but when Paul left the track on lap 20, Al sailed past him and went on to pull out nearly a five lap lead over the course of the remainder of the race. Nick in red couldn’t match the leader’s pace and had to settle for the bottom step of the podium.

SCHORC at the DHORC Le Mans 2014

After entering the first SCHORC named team last year and finishing in 5th position with 5345 laps, SCHORC’s hopes were high that the team could do even better this year.

The SCHORC Team

The SCHORC Team

Captained by SCHORC founder Tony Stacey, the team comprised of SCHORC members Al Wood, Paul Rose and Ray George. They were joined by DHORC’s James Mellor (who raced for the team in 2013), CHORC’s Paul Roach and previous Le Mans winner Sam Shearman. Sadly last year’s captain Roy Masters was unable to stay for the event but he was able to offer some tips and moral support during the car build.

After qualifying, the team opted to start on lane 8 which would then move on to lane 1. The plan being to get the two most difficult lanes out of the way early on.

The view from the driver's station

The view from the driver’s station

Despite running well in Quali, the SCHORC car proved difficult to drive in Race Trim and suffered a lot of tramping (bouncing on its rear wheels under acceleration due to excessive torque) during the opening phase of the race. Consequently the team spent the first 6 hours of the race languishing in P7.

After Al burned out the first race motor, Tony fitted a new one that proved to suit the car far better. Now driving well the team set about making up lost ground. First to be caught and passed were Ecurie Anglaise for P6 during hour 7. DHORC A were overhauled in the following hour for P5 before DHORC 1 were passed in hour 9 for P4. The car continued to run well through the night as SCHORC very gradually began to pull away from the two DHORC teams.

After a fairly smooth race through the night, those members of the team that had been able to catch a brief sleep, woke to find that not much had changed and everything was still running smoothly. In the penultimate lane of the race, the car’s pace began to drop off but another motor change soon had it running nicely again.

At 11am the race was paused for 2 minutes for Remembrance Sunday. With the race underway again the team drove on to take P4 with 5535 laps, beating both last year’s finishing position and lap count.

Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 5 Race Report

A dark and damp October evening saw 7 racers gather in Yelling for the penultimate round of the Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Championships. Joining the 6 regulars was Bill trying out HO racing for the first time although he had previous experience racing 1:32 and 1:24 slot cars.

The Track

Al had laid out a short fast track that was inspired by the Adelaide Parklands Circuit.

Qualifying

After an exciting qaulifying session, Tony took pole from Al by just over two laps. Despite taking the highest score of the class with 44.0 laps in red and the fastest lap with a 3.732, Paul Rose found himself third let down by his white and yellow scores. Nick lined up fourth ahead of Ray and Roy who were only separated by a single tenth of a lap. Bill took the final slot on the grid but set some competitive scores in both red and blue and also took the second fastest lap in the class.

For the first 40 seconds of the B final, there was very little to choose between Nick in blue, Ray in red and Roy in white. Bill in the yellow lane (which seemed to be the least favoured) dropped back from the front runners but persevered with the car to finish the race. Offs for Roy and Ray gave Nick a little breathing space up front but it wasn’t long before Ray was hounding Nick again. Despite the pressure from Ray, Nick carried on to take the win from Ray, Roy and Bill.

Tony took the early lead in the A final in the blue lane. Al wasn’t far behind him in red though and Nick wasn’t far behind Al in white either. Paul Rose quickly regretted his choice of the yellow lane as he dropped back and eventually retired on lap 24. An off for Tony on lap 5 handed the lead to Al and left Tony dicing for second with Nick. Tony seemed to have a bit more pace than Nick though and as the race progressed he pulled away from Nick and began to catch Al. Pushing hard Tony came off on lap 27 prevented him from getting too near Al. A late off for Al on lap 35 put Tony back within striking distance but Al held on to take his first win in the class this season.

An assured performance from Paul Rose saw him take pole with his Mega G by eight tenths of a lap from Tony and his Super G+. Tony took the fastest lap of the quali with a mighty 2.752 and was just under two laps ahead of Al in third. Ray lined up fourth ahead of Nick. After Roy’s new SRT toasted its arm in his first heat, he switched to a Mega G that wasn’t much to his liking and found himself sixth ahead of Bill who was getting to grips with an SRT borrowed from Al.

F1 Tyco and Modified Round 5 Race Report

A pleasent September evening saw 7 racers gather in Yelling for round 5 of the Tyco F1 and Modified Championships.

Al had put together a track based on the current Monza layout. The modern chicanes proved tricky particularly the first and second ones that had to be negotiated with care due to their tight 6 inch bends.

Qualifying

In a surprise move Al took pole with a new Tyco he had just purchased from Jim. Paul Rose was just a single tenth behind Al but over 6 laps clear of Jim in third. Jim was making a welcome return to the grid while selling off many of his cars so he used the club Tycos which were once again proving to be right on the pace when driven well. John Chell looked to be enjoying the circuit with a car well suited to the long straights and he lined up fourth less than a lap behind Jim. Nick took the fifth slot ahead of Tony and Steve. Tony put in the fastest F1 lap of the night on the blue lane that was more or less universal agreed to be the lane of choice.

Paul then put the hammer down, passed Jim for second and set about chasing Al down. Up front Al found himself with a narrow lead and Paul Rose steaming up behind him. Al didn’t seem to be taking any risks and was driving well within himself. This meant Paul kept catching him relatively easily but every time Paul caught him, he managed to come off. After 3 tense minutes Al breathed a sigh of relief taking his first F1 win of the season by less than half a lap from Paul. Jim took a tidy third place ahead of John Chell who rolled in fourth in yellow.

Mod

Qualifying

After an intense qualifying session with the Mods thundering around the Temple of Speed, Al again found himself on pole. After loosing a fair bit of time in the white lane with a popped rear axle after misjudging (or rather forgetting) his braking point heading into the Parabolica, he was glad to have banked a decent score early on in the yellow lane. Behind him Tony’s 917 bodied Marchon was looking formidable and Tony was pleased to find himself only just over half a lap behind Al. Paul Rose didn’t quite hook up his cars usual performance in the red lane and ended up just over nine laps back in third. Jim lined up fourth driving the battered green F40 infamously named “Christine” that he had borrowed from Nick. Steve took the 5th spot just ahead of John and Nick completed the order.

Nick surprised everyone by taking the early lead of the B final from the hardest lane, yellow. Jim and Christine in blue were right behind him though and John in white was also in the mix. An early off for Steve in red left him a bit further back but never too far from the action. A big off for Nick on lap 7 handed the lead to Jim but an off for Jim on lap 13 left Nick right behind him again. For the next 14 laps there was very little between them until Jim came off again and Nick briefly took the lead before coming off again giving Jim the lead and a bit of breathing space. With Nick just over a lap down “Gentleman” Jim seemed to back off just a shade in the closing stages of the race to allow Nick back onto the lead lap. Meanwhile John in white had caught and passed Nick and was actually in second and closing in on Jim. As the race ended John’s car finished less than an inch behind Jim’s in what may have been the closest finish in SCHORC history.

Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 4 Race Report

A warm August evening saw 9 racers gather in Yelling. Ray had brought along his son-in-law Martin and Martin’s young son Aston to join in the fun.

After some closely fought battles during the heats, Al emerged on top to take pole by just a single tenth of a lap. Behind him Ray and his new Truspeed controller was second by virtue of a higher total than Paul Homewood who had exactly the same best of three score as Ray. Roy lined up fourth a further two laps back and just under a lap ahead of Paul Rose in fifth. Nick was just over half a lap back in sixth ahead of Steve, Martin and Aston. Both Steve and Aston seemed to be quickly getting to grips with the micros and put in some very respectable scores and laptimes.

He was clearly improving all the time though posting a very fast 5.067 laptime and beating all of his heat scores with an impressive 28.2 laps. Ahead of him his Dad Martin was being hunted down by Steve who had initially let him get away a bit. As a result Paul quickly retired settling for fourth position but no doubt pleased to have claimed the fastest lap and highest score of the night during the B final. After a slightly hesitant start Al began to close Paul Homewood back down again and managed to pass him and eke out a narrow lead. In the closing stages of the race Paul began to put the pressure on Al again but came off giving him a bit of breathing space. With less than thirty seconds between what could have been Al’s first Micro win of the season, he binned it coming onto the start finish straight and unfortunately a marshalling fumble dropped him back to third place. Paul Homewood duly took his first Micro Scalextric win and broke Paul Rose’s streak of four back to back wins in the class. Ray took a tidy second ahead of a disappointed Al in third.

F1 Tyco and Modified Round 4 Race Report

The Track

For the July club meet, Al had put together a fast circuit with two long straights. The start finish straight led to a “dog bone” corner and the main straight led to a long tightening radius right hander. This then switched back to a tight left hander that opened up leading to a long fast S bend and the start finish straight. The switchback seemed to cause people with the most trouble as it was easy to carry to much speed from the fast entry to the long corner.

The Track

F1

Qualifying

Initially with only four racers present it was decided that finals wouldn’t be run and the qualifying order would be final. With Roy arrived halfway through quali it would have been possible to run finals but as the decision had already been made and agreed upon, it wasn’t changed.

A great drive from Tony secured him the top spot for the first time this season narrowly beating Ray by just three tenths of a lap. Ray and his Tyco were running very nicely though and he had the highest total score and also the biggest lapcount with a mighty 38.2 laps in red. Roy took third place 6.9 laps back but with the fastest F1 lap of the night. Paul Rose was fourth ahead of Al in fifth after they both struggled to get to grips with their new Truspeed controllers.

Qualifying

During free practice, Roy noticed that both Al and Paul were setting the driver station brakes control to the wrong setting for their new controllers. Once this was rectified the controllers started to perform properly and they both found them very much to their liking. Al found his Marchon far easier to tame through the lower speed bends and duly took the win along with a big score of 50.9 laps in blue and the fastest lap of the evening with a 3.273s. Paul Rose was second 6 laps behind Al and 11.3 laps ahead of Tony in third. Roy and his SRT took fourth ahead of Ray and his new Marchon that looked promising in the corners but lacked the straight line speed that this month’s track demanded.

Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 3 Race Report

A pleasant June evening saw 7 racers gather for the third round of Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1.

The Track

Ably assisted by Paul Homewood again, Al had designed a circuit vaguely based on The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve from Montreal Canada. After initially putting in the final chicane and Wall of Champions, Al decided it would be be impossible to marshall without obstructing the driver’s view and replaced it with a single long straight. The resulting track was fast and flowing and perhaps a welcome relief for some after last month’s track. The chicanes were fast and required just a slight lift to negotiate, so if you got them wrong you came off hard!

An off for Al at the hairpin handed Paul Rose a narrow lead. Al put in some of his fastest laps of the evening and closed the gap slightly but after another off at the hairpin, he had to settle for second. F1 Tyco and Modified Round 3 Race Report

The Track

For Round 3 of the Tyco F1 and Modified Championships Al had designed a mini-Monaco style track featuring some elevation change and the famous hairpin but missing the modern chicanes. Just like its 1:1 equivalent, the track was a very tricky drive and required 100% concentration. Unfortunately that divided opinion, while some drivers relished the challenge of the circuit, others didn’t enjoy it at all. There was however some general hilarity as cars flew off the track and into the “harbour”.

The Track

The Track 2

F1

Qualifying

With the white and blue lanes being significantly easier to drive than red and yellow, it was vital to secure a good qualifying result to snag one of the good lanes. Track position was everything and making up places in the finals looked likely to be tricky…

Qualifying was surprisingly close with just 3.6 laps separating pole from 7th place. Paul Homewood has the honour of securing pole position by just 0.2 laps from Paul Rose who put in the fastest F1 lap of the night in the blue lane. Jim returning for his first race of the 2014 season was straight on the pace in third just half a lap back from pole. Ray’s new Tyco had a promising first outing securing fourth place on the grid ahead of Al in fifth. Tony took sixth just two tenths in front of John with Roy and Steve completing the grid.

An early off for Ray in red left him on the back foot and behind Steve in blue and Jim in white who spent the first half of the race next and more or less neck and neck dicing of the lead. Offs for both Jim and Steve on the same lap opened things up again, and further offs for Jim allowed Ray to sneak into second behind Steve who took the win.

A solid start for Tony in blue while the others faltered gave him the early lead of the B final. As the race progressed the field spread out behind Tony, with Roy in white running second followed by Steve in yellow and John in red. This order would remain for the duration of the race although Roy went hard on the charge in the later phase of the race and closed the gap to Tony to just three tenths of a lap. Steve’s third place in the B final meant he improved on his qualifying position by two places which was the most of anyone over the course of the evening.

Paul Rose had the start he needed in white and held a narrow early lead from Paul Homewood in blue. Al in red and Tony in yellow quickly dropped back from the leaders and Al held third for the remainder of the race despite coming under pressure from Tony in the latter part of the race. Up front an off for Paul Rose at the start of the final minute handed the lead to Paul Homewood. A final off for Paul Homewood gave the lead back to Paul Rose who went on to finish just half a lap ahead and take the double win and the title of SCHORC Monaco Master.

Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 2 Race Report

A warm and bright spring evening saw 6 racers take to the track in Yelling with Ray returning for his second evening of racing at SCHORC.

The Track

Al was on track setup duties again this month and was again ably assisted by Paul Homewood. Al designed a track loosely based on the Bahrain International Circuit where the 1:1 F1 circus is heading this weekend. With no talk of fuel flow meters, tyre and fuel saving or aero balance, racing got under way with the club Micro XJ220s.

Qualifying

Pushing the club micros a tad harder than everyone else Paul Rose took the highest score in each lane and claimed pole by 3.7 laps. After complaining that he didn’t like the club cars for the entire session, Paul Homewood was surprised to find himself in second 4 tenths of a lap ahead of Al in third. Al pipped Tony to third by just a single tenth of a lap and Tony was the only driver other than pole sitter Paul Rose to dip below a 6 second lap in qualifying. John lined up fifth ahead of returning visitor Ray who was sampling the micros for the first time.

Once again the yellow car was the fastest but was also on the trickiest lane being on the inside for the tightest bend of the course turn 6. Tony’s choice of yellow didn’t pay off as he struggled for consistency and retired from third position after just 6 laps. Ahead of him John was pounding solidly round in blue but being pursued by Ray in white who was playing catch up after an early off. Over the course of the race Ray gradually reeled John in, finishing just a single tenth of a lap behind him on track at the end of the race.

Paul Rose shot off the grid in blue to take the early lead, an early off for Paul Homewood in white left him third until Al flew off into the barrier at turn 3. Paul Rose was next to crash leaving all three drivers back in a group together. Paul Rose then started to pull out a lead again leaving Paul Homewood in second and Al third. That ordered remained for the duration of the race with Paul Rose going on to take the win, fastest lap and highest score in the class with a mighty 29.1 laps.

Super F1

Qualifying

Paul Homewood to pole position with his Mega G by a comfortable 5.2 laps from Paul Rose. Tony took the fastest lap in qualifying with his SUper G+ and lined up third on the grid. Using one of Paul Rose’s spare chassis Ray took fourth 0.4 laps ahead of Al in fifth. John lined up sixth but was enjoying driving his Mega G more than usual having flipped one of his magnets to put it into the high downforce configuration.

The B final saw Al in white leading a tightly bunched field of Ray in blue and John in red. An off on lap four sent Al back to third but a marginal pace advantage allowed him to claw his way back to front and then pull out a one lap advantage. Behind him Ray and John were having a proper battle over second place and a late off for John allowed Ray to take that place by just under half a lap.

After a good start, a run of poor early laps from Paul Homewood in blue left him distinctly on the back foot. Paul Rose was out in front in the white lane with Tony in red just behind him. Paul Homewood then set about banging in some consistently fast laps that enabled him to first pass Tony who was struggling for consistency and then start to close in Paul Rose. Some laps Paul Rose could match Paul Homewood’s times and the gap stayed the same, other laps Paul Homewood would take a nibble out of Paul Rose’s lead. An off for Paul Rose on lap 23 left Paul Homewood right on his tail and a couple of further offs in the closing stages of the race allowed Paul Homewood to charge past and take the win.
