Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 3 Race Report

The Track

The third Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 round of the season saw 6 racers line up on the grid to take on a fast sweeping track designed by Tony.

The Track 2

Micro Scalextric Club Class

Qualifying

The reigning Micro Class Champion Paul took the pole by 1.1 laps from Ray. Both had proved to be evenly matched throughout qualifying making for an interesting final. Steve was 2.7 laps behind Ray with Nick fractionally behind by 0.1 laps. Tony was fifth just under 2 laps behind Nick, and Roy brought up the rear just over a lap behind Tony.

Although Nick had the advantage of picking any lane in the ‘B’ Final he drove like a complete donkey leaving Roy and Tony to thrash it out. Despite Tony pulling out the fastest lap of the evening in this class a series of offs allowed Roy to pull ahead. Roy went on to get his highest lap count of the evening and finish overall in 4th place nearly 2 laps ahead of Tony who finished 5th overall.

As anticipated based on qualifying the ‘A’ Final was very hotly contested between Ray and Paul with both drivers taking turns to lead the race throughout the 3 minutes. Steve was never far behind ready to capitalise on any mistakes and managed to put in his fastest lap during the final. It was Paul that came out victorious in the end with Ray just over half a lap behind.

Super F1

Qualifying

Roy made a welcome return to SF1 along with his second car affectionately called ‘Son of Red Peril’ and made easy work of the qualifying stages beating the nearest competition by nearly 8 laps. The rest of the field were reasonably well spread out with Tony qualifying second, followed by Ray, Nick, Paul and Steve bringing up the rear.

It’s fair to say that Paul wasn’t enjoying his MG which had previously served him so well, and beyond 3 or 4 laps of speed seem to be suffering with an overheating motor. Nick made up for some inconsistent racing earlier in the evening and won the B Final by over 4 laps and even managed to put in a fastest lap time (soon to be taken away). Paul and Steve had been competing for 5th spot but nearly a minute in to the B Final a series of offs allowed Paul to put some distance between the two and finish in 5th spot mirroring the qualifying positions.

After a close start to the race some offs for Tony and Ray allowed a very consistent Roy to get some distance from the others. Some early offs for Tony gave Ray the advantage in second but Tony with the superior speed went about reeling Ray back in and in the latter stages of the race went through to take second place. There was a period of 3 or 4 laps where Tony and Roy were exchanging fastest lap times both demonstrating just how competitive a well-tuned SRT and SG+ can be in this class.

F1 Tyco and Modified Round 3 Race Report

A windy May evening saw 7 SCHORCers gather in Yelling for Round 3 of the Tyco F1 and Modified Championships.

The Track

Al had laid out a tight, technical track based on the Formula E variant of the Monaco circuit. The tight 6 inch bends scattered around the track kept everyone on their toes and made it a real handling track.

The track

The track 2

F1

Qualifying

Some great scores including a mighty 42.7 laps in white, propelled Ray to the his 3rd F1 pole position on the bounce. Paul Rose was just 2 laps behind Ray with Al a further 4.3 laps further back in third. A good drive from Steve saw him pip Nick to the fourth grid spot by one lap. Behind Nick was Bill leaving Tony at the back of the grid.

F1 B Final

Following some tense opening laps, it was Nick in blue who emerged as the early leader of the B final. Tony in the unfavoured yellow lane wasn’t far behind Nick and Steve in white was only just behind Tony. A big off for Bill in red left him behind the front runners and he had to settle for fourth. An off for Tony on lap 7 handed second place to his brother Steve and left him to briefly take the lead on lap 18 when Nick left the track. Steve came off not long after Nick though and Nick retook the lead. Tony was now right with Steve and he seemed to settle into his groove and gradually pull away from his brother over the final minute of the race. A close finish saw Nick take the win with 40.2 laps with Tony just 0.9 laps behind him and Steve just a further 0.4 laps behind Tony with Bill completing the order in fourth.

Paul in red and polesitter Ray in white both got off to storming starts in the A final. Al in blue and Nick in yellow both had an early off that left them playing catch up. Nick retired quite early in the race not wanting to get in the way of the action unfolding at the front. Paul and Ray were both racing on the limit and caught up in what descended into a slightly scrappy battle with both of them leaving the track several times. So intent were they in fighting each other, they failed to notice that Al had passed them both and taken the lead. Despite both Ray and Paul having superior one lap pace to Al, neither could catch him. Al took the win with 42.1 laps, 1.7 laps ahead of Ray in second who finished just a single tenth of a lap ahead of Paul in third.

Pole sitter Al got off to a slow start in red and pushing to make up lost ground he had an early off, this left Tony in yellow with the lead ahead of Paul in blue. A scrappy series of laps for everyone left Tony in third with Al and Paul vying for the lead. Paul matched Al’s pace until the mid point of the race where he started to drop back. Focusing on taking the fastest lap Paul had a few more offs until he found himself battling with Tony for second. At the end of the race Al took the win with over 7 laps in hand and rather cheekily snatched the fastest lap from Paul on his final lap. After a tense final few laps, Tony edged Paul to second by just a single tenth.

Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 2 Race Report

The Track

To host round 2 of the Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Championships, Al had build an Indianapolis Motor Speedway style oval.

The Track

Micro Scalextric Club Class

Qualifying

Tony appeared to be nicely in his groove around the oval and took pole with some consistently big scores in white, blue and red leaving him 2.3 laps ahead of his nearest rival. Despite setting the highest single score in Quali with a mighty 46.6 in white, Paul was pipped to the second grid spot by Al. Paul was just 0.3 laps behind Al and a mere 0.2 laps ahead of Nick in fourth. Ray lined up fifth ahead of Bill and Aston.

Nick in white looked to have the measure of the other drivers in the B final, gradually pulling away from his nearest rival Ray in blue and going on to take the win with a massive 46.9 laps. A few offs for Aston allowed Bill to take third place midway through the race but Aston still finished with a smile on his face.

Pole sitter Tony got off to great start in blue but Al was hot on his heels in white. Paul in red was also in contention until a series of offs dropped him back. Tony and Al continued to lap more or less neck and neck for the first 50 seconds off the race until some rubbing in one of the corners left Tony in the wall and Al with the lead. Paul later retired from the race leaving Nick to take third behind second place Tony and winner Al.

The final half of the race saw Tony close Nick down again and the pair raced around together until Nick crashed in the final few seconds of the race leaving Tony to take the win by 0.7 laps from Nick. F1 Tyco and Modified Round 2 Race Report

Just five regular SCHORC members gathered for the second round of the Tyco and Modified Championships, but they were joined by Father and Son Robbie and George who were giving HO racing a try for the first time.

The Track

Al had built a fairly straight forward power track that proved pretty well balanced across the lanes and hosted some excellent racing.

The Track

F1

Qualifying

Birthday Boy Ray looked to be a safe bet for pole throughout quali and so it proved as he stormed to pole over twelve laps clear of his nearest rival Paul Rose. Roy was three laps behind Paul with Al a further 5.7 laps behind him in fourth. Tony finished fifth a further 3.2 laps behind Al. Robbie and George looked to be enjoying their first taste of HO racing and both set some respectable scores and laptimes lining up sixth and seventh respectively.

George made a fine start in the blue lane in his first final and was right at the front of the field for the first four laps. His father Robbie made a shakier start in yellow but capitalised on a couple offs from George to take third place. Al in white just held on to Tony in red for the first minute but after that he began to drop back unable to match Tony’s pace. Tony duly took the win from Al, Robbie and George.

Tony in the yellow hop up lane couldn’t stay with the rest of the pack and had to settle for fourth. After his troubled start Ray had settled into his groove and making the most of a couple of mistakes from his rivals, took the lead and proceeded to drive off up the road to take his first F1 Championship win by 3.6 laps. Mod

Qualifying

Al’s mod was looking on formidable form early on in quali until it suddenly started flying off the track as soon as it saw a corner. Al swapped to his spare car and managed enough laps with that to still secure pole despite his confidence taking quite a knock. Behind him Tony was looking fast, taking the highest lap count in both the blue and yellow lanes and sweeping to the second spot on the grid. After enduring some difficult months with his Mod, Paul was starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. A new motor and some tweaks to his pick-up springs were starting to yield some results and his car’s speed continued to improve throughout qualifying leaving him third. Roy and his SRT lined up fourth ahead of Ray and his MR1 in fifth. The club Turbos were off the pace on such a fast track but Robbie and George looked to be getting some useful experience of the higher downforce class and lined up sixth and seventh again.

Tracing his issues in Quali to a bent rear axle Al fitted a spare to his car for the final. A run of early offs left Al a distant fourth in the red lane, ahead of him Paul was out in the lead in white with Tony in blue behind him. Roy in yellow was running third. A few offs for Paul moved him down to second and then briefly third place. Tony made the most of this pulling out a reasonable lead. Behind them Al had past Roy and briefly moved up to second before Paul got himself back in to gear and retook second before starting to chase down Tony. A big off for Tony left Paul right behind him for twenty seconds until Paul came off and had to settle for second. Tony duly took his first win of 2015 from Paul, Al and Roy.

F1 Tyco and Modified Round 1 Race Report

A dark and cold January evening saw the opening round of the 2015 SCHORC season. Five SCHORC members extended a warm welcome to Ozgur who had come along to try out some SCHORC style HO racing.

The Track

For the first meeting of the 2015 season, Al had laid out the same track that Worthing club WHO Racing were using that night for their Mod round. Since their mod rules are a bit different to SCHORC’s, Al thought it might be interesting to compare scores…

The track was big (it just fitted within Yelling Village Hall!) and fast but with some tricky sections that made for some interesting racing.

The track 2

F1

Qualifying

Ray’s Tyco was looking like the one to beat throughout Quali and sure enough he took the first pole position of the season 0.6 laps ahead of the freshly crowned F1 champ Paul Rose. Al took the third grid slot just over 5 laps from pole. Nick took fourth a couple laps behind Al, with Tony fifth and Ozgur sixth. Ozgur seemed to be getting to grips nicely with the club Tycos setting some respectable laptimes and scores.

The B final suffered an aborted start due to power issue on the red lane and then a second as the “Grosjean” rule was applied following all three competitors crashing together at the hairpin. On the third try everyone got away cleanly with Nick in red leading Ozgur in white and Tony in blue. Tony took a while to find his rhythm in the blue lane and a succession of offs left him a distant third. An off on the second lap for Nick handed Ozgur the lead which he held for the next 9 laps until an off allowed Nick back into the lead. The race remained close until the end with Ozgur finishing just under a lap behind Nick. Behind them Tony had got into his groove but had lost too much ground early on and had to settle for third.

The first minute of the A final could have been an exhibition race with all three compitors seperated by no more than a foot or so and all dicing for the lead. Ray in red was first to crack coming off just before the first minute was over. Paul in white and Al in blue then both came off just a handful of seconds later putting all three drivers on a more or less equal pegging again. After another minute punctuated by a series of offs for each driver, it was Al who emerged with a narrow lead that he managed to hold on to until the end of the race. Qualifying

Reigning Mod Champion Al continued his formidable 2014 form, taking pole by just over 7 laps from Nick. Paul’s MR1 was struggling for straightline speed and able to take the majority of the track flat, so he was surprised to still find himself third. Ozgur looked to be enjoying driving Nick’s second MR1 chassis and took the fourth spot ahead of Tony and Ray.

Ozgur was clearly quite comfortable with his borrowed Marchon by the time the B final started. From the red lane, he was right on Tony’s tail for the first 7 laps before he came off and left Tony with some breathing space. Behind them Ray was struggling in white with a car that didn’t really have the speed or grip to be competitive. With two minutes gone, Tony had extended his lead and was looking comfortable until a trip to the floor left his car with a popped body and axle. By the time he was going again the lead was gone and Ozgur duly took the win.

Paul made a good start in white and despite his car, managed to match the early pace of Nick in red and Al in blue. As Nick and Al started to wind up their pace, Paul dropped back and a few offs then left him a fair way back. Meanwhile Nick and Al were engaged in a titanic battle running neck and neck for the first two minutes of the race. At the two minute mark Nick lost it and left Al with a small cushion. A couple of laps later after easing off slightly Al came off too and found Nick right on his tail again. With the race drawing to a close, Nick had another off and despite Al throwing it off the track again in the final few seconds, Al took the win by just 0.2 laps.

After entering the first SCHORC named team last year and finishing in 5th position with 5345 laps, SCHORC’s hopes were high that the team could do even better this year.

The SCHORC Team

The SCHORC Team

Captained by SCHORC founder Tony Stacey, the team comprised of SCHORC members Al Wood, Paul Rose and Ray George. They were joined by DHORC’s James Mellor (who raced for the team in 2013), CHORC’s Paul Roach and previous Le Mans winner Sam Shearman. Sadly last year’s captain Roy Masters was unable to stay for the event but he was able to offer some tips and moral support during the car build.

After qualifying, the team opted to start on lane 8 which would then move on to lane 1. The plan being to get the two most difficult lanes out of the way early on.

Despite running well in Quali, the SCHORC car proved difficult to drive in Race Trim and suffered a lot of tramping (bouncing on its rear wheels under acceleration due to excessive torque) during the opening phase of the race. Consequently the team spent the first 6 hours of the race languishing in P7.

After Al burned out the first race motor, Tony fitted a new one that proved to suit the car far better. Now driving well the team set about making up lost ground. First to be caught and passed were Ecurie Anglaise for P6 during hour 7. DHORC A were overhauled in the following hour for P5 before DHORC 1 were passed in hour 9 for P4. The car continued to run well through the night as SCHORC very gradually began to pull away from the two DHORC teams.

After a fairly smooth race through the night, those members of the team that had been able to catch a brief sleep, woke to find that not much had changed and everything was still running smoothly. In the penultimate lane of the race, the car’s pace began to drop off but another motor change soon had it running nicely again.

At 11am the race was paused for 2 minutes for Remembrance Sunday. With the race underway again the team drove on to take P4 with 5535 laps, beating both last year’s finishing position and lap count.

Over the grueling 24 hour period, our little car covered 244.599 miles around what is surely one of the greatest slot car tracks in the world.

Thanks to all at DHORC for organising another truly epic event!

Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Round 5 Race Report

A dark and damp October evening saw 7 racers gather in Yelling for the penultimate round of the Micro Scalextric Club Class and Super F1 Championships. Joining the 6 regulars was Bill trying out HO racing for the first time although he had previous experience racing 1:32 and 1:24 slot cars.

The Track

Al had laid out a short fast track that was inspired by the Adelaide Parklands Circuit.

Micro Scalextric Club Class

Qualifying

After an exciting qaulifying session, Tony took pole from Al by just over two laps. Despite taking the highest score of the class with 44.0 laps in red and the fastest lap with a 3.732, Paul Rose found himself third let down by his white and yellow scores. Nick lined up fourth ahead of Ray and Roy who were only separated by a single tenth of a lap. Bill took the final slot on the grid but set some competitive scores in both red and blue and also took the second fastest lap in the class.

For the first 40 seconds of the B final, there was very little to choose between Nick in blue, Ray in red and Roy in white. Bill in the yellow lane (which seemed to be the least favoured) dropped back from the front runners but persevered with the car to finish the race. Offs for Roy and Ray gave Nick a little breathing space up front but it wasn’t long before Ray was hounding Nick again. Despite the pressure from Ray, Nick carried on to take the win from Ray, Roy and Bill.

Tony took the early lead in the A final in the blue lane. Al wasn’t far behind him in red though and Nick wasn’t far behind Al in white either. Paul Rose quickly regretted his choice of the yellow lane as he dropped back and eventually retired on lap 24. An off for Tony on lap 5 handed the lead to Al and left Tony dicing for second with Nick. Tony seemed to have a bit more pace than Nick though and as the race progressed he pulled away from Nick and began to catch Al. Pushing hard Tony came off on lap 27 prevented him from getting too near Al. A late off for Al on lap 35 put Tony back within striking distance but Al held on to take his first win in the class this season.

Super F1

Qualifying

An assured performance from Paul Rose saw him take pole with his Mega G by eight tenths of a lap from Tony and his Super G+. Tony took the fastest lap of the quali with a mighty 2.752 and was just under two laps ahead of Al in third. Ray lined up fourth ahead of Nick. After Roy’s new SRT toasted its arm in his first heat, he switched to a Mega G that wasn’t much to his liking and found himself sixth ahead of Bill who was getting to grips with an SRT borrowed from Al.

For the B final Roy broke out his best SRT that he had apparently been saving… Despite a few offs from the yellow lane he held the lead for most of the race and took the win from Nick in blue, Ray in red and Bill in white.

After warming up in the B FInal Roy was firmly in the groove in the hop up white lane and set off at blistering pace. Behind him Paul Rose was give it everything he had and despite improving on his heat score in red by almost two laps, he still found himself almost five laps behind Roy as the race finished. Behind them Al and Tony had a good dice for third. A string of offs for Tony in the blue lane in the final minute of the race eventually gave Al in yellow the final podium spot.
